r/sales

A community of working salespeople, which is a specific and sometimes confusing proposition: they are not your customers unless you sell to sales teams, in which case they are exactly your customers.

What the numbers say

r/sales sees a steady flow of posts โ€” about 12 a day โ€” with real discussion on most posts. Active discussion of a kind that suits a community built on a shared professional grievance โ€” quota, comp plans, management and prospecting. It accepts text posts only, so there is no way to submit a link as a post โ€” whatever you want read has to be written out in the post itself.

Know which side of the transaction you are on

If you sell CRM, sales engagement, data enrichment, call recording or commission software, this is a well-targeted room where members frequently influence or make the purchase โ€” and where they complain about incumbents in useful detail.

If you sell anything else, this community is a poor prospecting target and a slightly hazardous one. Its members recognise prospecting techniques professionally, and using one here is noticed immediately and usually mocked publicly.

The other use, worth mentioning because it is genuinely valuable, is as an education resource. Threads on discovery calls, objection handling and pipeline management are practical and specific in a way that founders selling their own product for the first time will find directly applicable.

Promotion rules, in the moderators' own words

5 of r/sales's 11 rules govern promotion, advertising or soliciting, quoted verbatim:

No Selling or Self Promotion

Users are strictly not allowed to promote what they sell here and should refrain from revealing who they sell for unless directly asked. This includes offering your solution in response to recommendation request, free trials, soliciting feedback, and similar conduct. Users found breaking this rule w

No Spam, Affiliation to Recommendations or Referral Links

Spam, affiliation to recommendations posted, and referral links will result in a ban. Company or solution recommendations are only allowed by customers of what is being recommended. Recommendations by users working for or related to what they are recommending are not allowed and should be reported.

No Marketing or Blogspam

We do allow articles but we do not allow marketing blogspam. Any post that looks like blogspam will be removed and you will receive a permanent ban. If you are the writer of an article, a full text version may be posted with identifying information removed and without backlinks to the blog. Company

No Off-Site Communities

Any attempt to create, advertise or recruit r/Sales users to join off-site communities will result in an immediate and permanent ban. This includes Discord channels, other social media sites, masterclass groups, or networking groups and associations that require payment for membership.

Zero Contribution

Posts or comments that do not contribute directly to a sales topic, or closely related to a sales topic, will be removed. This includes questions about marketing, HR/workplace related issues and generalized questions already answered by other threads or in the Wiki.

Frequently asked questions

Can you promote your business in r/sales?

Cautiously and with disclosure. This audience identifies sales tactics for a living, so anything resembling a prospecting approach will be recognised and called out โ€” check the current rules before posting.

Is r/sales good for finding leads?

Useful, but the promotion rules will catch you out. Well targeted if you sell to sales teams, actively counterproductive if you are using it to prospect for anything else.
