RedditScout Use Cases

Four playbooks, and they genuinely differ — because the constraint is different in each case. A freelancer loses to reply order. An agency loses to unqualified leads. A SaaS founder loses to volume. A bootstrapper loses to being invisible. The same advice cannot fix four different problems.

SaaS

Agencies

Qualifying a lead from the post alone, the karma gate on r/marketing, and the white-label lane most agencies never work.

Freelancers

The r/forhire rules in detail, why r/freelance will never get you hired, and why speed beats a polished pitch.

Indie Hackers

Why r/SideProject is a trap at 294 posts a day, where indies actually get read, and the three plays that work.

Which one are you?

If you are not sure which playbook fits, the fastest way to tell is to ask what actually goes wrong for you today.

The one number that applies to everyone

Whichever playbook you follow, there is a single measurement that predicts whether a subreddit is worth your time, and hardly anyone checks it: the median comment count.

Subscriber counts tell you nothing — they measure people who clicked "join" years ago. Posts per day tells you what a community will cost you to read. But median comments tells you whether anyone is listening, and that is what decides whether your reply changes anything.

Median comment counts across four very different subreddits
Subreddit Members Posts/day Median comments What it means for you
r/SideProject 800k 294 1 Enormous volume, almost no discussion. Posts vanish in minutes.
r/smallbusiness 2.5M 111 5 Real buying problems described daily. Promotion removed on sight.
r/indiehackers 186k 2.9 46 Tiny volume, heavy discussion. Everything posted gets read.
r/freelance 690k 0.4 54 Roughly one post a day, and the whole community turns up for it.

Measured 5 August 2026 from the 100 most recent posts in each community, excluding pinned threads. Full stats and promotion rules for each are in the subreddit directory, or check any other community with the free Subreddit Checker.

r/SideProject and r/freelance differ by a factor of about seven hundred in posting volume and by a factor of fifty in discussion, in opposite directions. Treating them as interchangeable "communities to post in" is why most Reddit marketing advice does not work.

The shape to look for is the middle one: meaningful volume with a moderate median, like r/smallbusiness at 111 posts a day and a median of 5. Enough questions arriving that opportunities appear, and enough discussion to prove people are actually reading. A median of 1 is not an untapped opportunity — it is a wall that posts scroll past, yours included. A median of 50 is a real community you will have to earn your place in before selling anything, which is worth doing but takes months.
