r/shopify

A platform community rather than a topic community, and that distinction matters enormously for anyone building on or around Shopify โ€” the targeting is essentially perfect.

What the numbers say

r/shopify sees a steady flow of posts โ€” about 11 a day โ€” with real discussion on most posts. Good volume of practical, specific problems. Platform communities skew towards support questions, which is exactly what makes them useful to vendors. It accepts text posts only, so there is no way to submit a link as a post โ€” whatever you want read has to be written out in the post itself.

The clearest targeting on this directory

If your product is a Shopify app, an agency service for Shopify merchants, or a tool that integrates with it, this community is as close to a pre-qualified audience as Reddit offers. Every member has the platform. Most have a store with revenue. A large share of posts are specific problems that an app or a service exists to solve.

The pattern that works is straightforward and slow: answer the support questions properly, including when the answer is a competitor's product or a native feature they had not found. App developers who do this consistently become known, and being known is worth more than any single post.

The pattern that fails is answering every "which app for X" thread with your own app. Members read post histories, and an account that only ever recommends one product is discounted immediately โ€” often with a public comment saying so.

Promotion rules, in the moderators' own words

3 of r/shopify's 11 rules govern promotion, advertising or soliciting, quoted verbatim:

No Success Stories / Guides / How-To / Blogspam / AI

No unsolicited AMA (ask me anything) posts, success stories, 'how I made' posts, expert guides, blogs, 'top' lists, I analyzed 5,000 stores..., case studies, 'what we learned' etc. Longform posts that are clear blogspam, suspected AI (in the view of a moderator) or reported as such may be removed.

Soliciting, Promotion, or Direct Soliciting via DM

This should be self-evident. This is a place to exchange helpful information freely, as posts that stay up will help others in the future. This is not the place to promote yourself or services to the members here. Violations and attempts to circumvent this rule by "recommending someone" inviting pri

No spamming or links to external content.

The sharing of any links, be it in a YouTube description or otherwise is not allowed. Content marketing via blog articles will not be allowed. Please avoid links for signup for Shopify as well as for apps and external courses.
